The best way for me to describe my week in Las Vegas is “Miss Michigan Buzz!” Whether I was on the elevator, at the Fashion Show mall, in a restaurant on the strip, in a taxicab, or simply walking around the Planet Hollywood Resort, all you could hear was the chatter about our wonderful Miss Michigan. I vividly remember an elevator trip in Planet Hollywood on Thursday, where a father of another contestant looked at my button of Kirsten (which was a fashion statement I was proud to wear!) and said, “Miss Michigan rocked the house last night!” He was right...and that's OUR girl!
Kirsten is such a natural on stage. We were all ecstatic when she captured the Wednesday preliminary swimsuit award, and let me say that if they would have given an evening gown award, she would have won that too! She truthfully was flawless.
Saturday quickly arrived… The Haglund's were so kind to open their suite to all of the Miss Michigan crew by hosting a brunch honoring Kirsten in which we prayed for her and shared emotions of excitement. At that point, we knew she did her best and that it was in God's hands, but we never second guessed that Kirsten was the “IT” girl… it was just time for the judges to realize that!
Of course Vegas would not have been complete without shopping, shopping, shopping! I want to thank Larry, Julie, Rob, Audrie, Sheila, Doug, Paula, and Carleigh for their expert advice. What better place to get you in the mood to compete for Miss Michigan than Miss America! Also, I must thank Julie for taking me under her wing and allowing me to room with her during my stay in Vegas! I couldn't have asked for a better roommate.
As I heard the flight attendant say, “You may now use all cellular phones… Welcome to Detroit,” I powered up my phone to find a voicemail from Robin Schwartz from Fox 2 News! I returned the phone call as I was walking off the plane, to find out they wanted me in-studio immediately for an interview that aired last night and this morning! I had to quickly pick up my luggage, rush home to shower, and head to Southfield to represent this incredible organization and just as importantly, Kirsten's “fan club.” It was such a privilege to speak about Kirsten's beauty (inside and out) and how remarkable it is to be able to call Miss America my friend! I cannot think of a more deserving individual. She is a blessing to this organization and I cannot wait to watch her blossom over the next year and see the remarkable strides she will make for this program.
Kirsten – I can't wait for your extraordinary homecoming. All of us Miss Michigan contestants have such a wonderful young woman to emulate. You have made us all so proud and I pray that you have safe travels as our new Miss America. You are an angel to every child (especially through CMN) you will come in contact with. GOD BLESS YOU!
In the spirit of Miss America,
