October 17th, I had the pleasure of modeling at the Suburban League Fashion Show, which is an annual appearance for Miss Wayne County that benefits Burger School for Autism. Being that I substitute teach for Garden City Public Schools, it was very meaningful to see a charity event benefiting Burger. I was privileged to model with Ron Savage from FOX 2 News and Erin Nicole from channel 7, as well as meeting Glenda Lewis from channel 7. As an aspiring TV personality, I was so grateful to have the chance to mingle with such prominent people in our community.
On October 25th, I was able to travel to Hockeytown Café in downtown Detroit as a volunteer with the MDA “Lock-up.” This is an annual event that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Summer Camp. Nominated citizens of Wayne County were “jailed” at Hockeytown and encouraged to raise money for their “bail” as part of the MDA Lock-Up. Local business and community leaders agree to be "arrested" for having a “big heart.” I was there to meet and greet, and yes… I even had a mug shot taken! I also had the honor of “booking” Charles Pugh from FOX 2 into jail. I would like to thank Francesca for offering this appearance to me. It was so touching to see the number of people that took the time out of their work day to come spend some time in “jail” to help send kids to summer camp. The highlight of my day was meeting Zachary who is a child that has been to MDA's camp. The smile on his face was worth every penny raised!
With only a few hours of sleep, I was up bright and early the next day to travel back from Muskegon to the east side of the state for an appearance. I was invited to emcee “Detroit's Most Beautiful Baby Contest” at Oakland Mall that benefits Children's Miracle Network at Beaumont Hospital. Hundreds of people came out for the event which rose over $12,000 for Children's Miracle Network. There I had the opportunity to take pictures with Fanchon Stinger from FOX 2 as well as the most adorable children from Southeast Michigan. Now that Children's Miracle Network is the official national platform of the Miss America Organization, it was wonderful to be part of such a successful event.
This coming Saturday is the Teen and Miss Washtenaw County Scholarship Pageant. I am so excited to go back to where my pageant journey began. It is hard to believe it has been two years since I was crowned Miss Washtenaw. That year and title will always have a special place in my heart and I can't wait to welcome a new “sister” into the Miss Washtenaw County family. I better get going to pass out candy – Happy Halloween!
Until next time,
