The month of March was an exciting one between Kirsten's Homecoming, Miss Lighthouse Coast, MM Orientation, Dallas, and Michigan's Junior Miss. It is hard to believe that Miss Michigan week is a little over two months away! I absolutely cannot wait. Spring has definitely sprung my pageant fever!
On March 17th, I had the pleasure of joining Gina Valo, Miss Michigan 2007, to work for Avfuel at an aviation trade show in Dallas, TX. It was nice to have time to catch up with Gina and reminisce about all our pageant experiences. I have adopted Gina as my big sister because she always knows how to “save the day” when I get myself into tricky little situations. This all started at my first Miss Michigan preliminary when I was extremely sick before and after my talent performance. I could barely walk to the dressing room after collapsing in the curtain when I was done with my talent. Gina took me under her wing and helped me every step of the way.
I found myself in another “I need Gina” moment when we were in Dallas and no one gave me the memo that we needed a cocktail dress! Thankfully Gina brought two (the prepared Miss Michigan she is) and so graciously let me borrow one of hers. Although I had a minor moment of panic, we had an absolute blast! It all started on the plane ride from Detroit to Dallas. I sat in my 8th row seat, to find Gina trotting all the way to the back of the plane. We both chuckled knowing that I had gotten the better seat. After arriving to the Adolphus, a beautiful historic hotel, I went to check in assuming Gina and I would be sharing a room. When the clerk told me that she wasn't on my reservation, Gina went to the next line. I overheard her clerk say, “Sorry we are out of king beds, would two double beds be fine?” I looked up at my clerk to see his smirk which followed by, “I just got you the last king bed!” In fun, I looked over to Gina to rub it in (just a little). ;-)
Last weekend, I had the honor of joining my MJM sisters at the 50th Annual Michigan's Junior Miss program. It was nice to catch up with Chelsea Lambertt from the MJM class of 2003 and meet so many former Michigan Junior Misses that I have never met before. It is truly a wonderful sorority to be part of. It was also exciting seeing so many familiar faces including two of my former judges, Lee and Don Thomas. It has been a couple years since I have been able to go to the state program and it was like a family reunion. Not to mention, how wonderful its new venue in Ann Arbor was. As much as I love Alpena, you can't beat the convenience of Ann Arbor!
It was so enjoyable to sit in the audience and cheer on several girls of whom I have come close to these past few months including: Raven Rickard, Wayne- Westland's JuniorMiss; Rachel Mlynar, Westland's Junior Miss; Erin Wheeler, Plymouth-Canton's Junior Miss; and Whitney Askew, Canton's Junior Miss. All four of the girls represented their respective programs so well. Congratulations to Whitney on winning the talent award. Your hard work truly paid off. Another congratulations to Raven on being 1st runner-up! What an accomplishment.; you should be very proud. Lastly, I want to welcome Erin Wheeler, Michigan's Junior Miss 2008, into the MJM sisterhood! You were more than deserving of the title, and it has been such an honor working with you in your preparations. I want to share my sincerest congratulations! Good luck at AJM in Mobile…you will be a great representative for our state.
The next few weeks are bound to be just as promising as the month of March. I will be going back to my alma mater to judge the Mr. John Glenn contest. I also will be making a trip to Flint to volunteer at the Radiothon benefiting Children's Miracle Network/Hurley Medical Center. Then on the 22nd, I will be celebrating my 23rd birthday! I guess you could consider that old in “pageant years.” However, I don't feel old what-so-ever! I am definitely “young” at heart! ;-)
I want to share my gratitude to all those who have made this year so rewarding. It has been an honor to represent my “home” county. I look forward to the upcoming months!
Until next time,
