She has been announced as the Grand Marshal for the 49th annual Downtown Garden City Santaland Parade.
The Novi native will appear through the efforts of longtime Garden City businessman Orin Mazzoni Jr., owner of Orin Jewelers.
“I've been a financial supporter of the parade for quite some time now and I'm thrilled to be able to bring Miss Blaszczyk to our wonderful parade,” said Mazzoni.
“Orin Jewelers and the Santaland Parade have been great traditions in Garden City and I'm glad to be a part of it,” he said.
Dan York, organizer of the Santaland parade, said that Mazzoni presented the possibility of her appearance just recently.
“He did all of the legwork,” York said.
Mazzoni explained that he met Miss Michigan because her mother and his wife know each other.
When Blaszycyk agreed to hand out Halloween candy at his Northville store, Mazzoni broached the topic of having her reach out still further to the Garden City community.
Crowned Miss Michigan in June 2009, Blaszycyk is a native of Novi and a student at Wayne State University where she plans to obtain a business degree in marketing and a master's degree in business administration. She will compete for the Miss America crown in January in Las Vegas.
Among her accomplishments is that Blaszczyk was a two-time semifinalist of the television show So You Think You Can Dance, a featured extra in three films created in Michigan, a member of the Spark dance team for the Detroit Ignition, a featured dancer in the 2005-08 Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day halftime shows and a dancer for BMW at the Detroit International Auto Show 2008.
As a member of the Ignition Dance team, Blaszczyk has appeared in the Downtown Garden City Parade the last two years.
“Having Miss Michigan as a part of our parade is an enormous boost,” York said. “In January, Garden City residents will be able to watch the Miss America pageant and know that the next potential Miss America celebrated their holiday parade with them.”
The 2009 Downtown Garden City Santaland Parade will begin at Garden City High School at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28, travel south on Middlebelt, then head east on Ford Road and end at the site of the Farmer's Market in the Town Center parking lot where the DDA will host Santaland, where Santa receive the key to the city. Winners of the float competition will be announced and there will be an opportunity for Santa to visit with children up until 1 p.m. Complete details can be found at www.santalandparade.com.
Those who wish to meet Miss Michigan may also do so from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Orin Jewelers located on Ford Road and Middlebelt during a special Christmas show.
